General piercing measurements

Gauge: Thickness of the part of the piece that passes directly through the piercing.

  • Measured by a gauge sizing tool or gauge card, a caliper, or by a piercer

Diameter: Measurement across the opening of a circle. Remember that this is the measurement across the opening, and does not include the outside of the circle itself. This is why you may hear it called the "inside diameter" of a piece. You are only measuring the open space.

  • Measured with a ruler, caliper, or pencil and paper, drawing a straight line between two inside sides of the circle and measuring

Length: Distance from tip to tip of the wearable portion of a piece.

  • Measurable by ruler, or using a pencil and paper, by laying an item flat, and making a mark at either end of the wearable portion of the piece, then measuring the distance between them.

Due to variations of screens, the above will not give you accurate measurements if you try to measure using the screen.

Jewelry Lengths

Body jewelry is commonly measured in millimeters. For reference, 2mm is approximately 0.08", 4mm is 0.16", 5mm is 0.20", 6mm is 0.24", 7mm is 0.28", 8mm is 0.32", 9mm is 0.35", 10mm is 0.39", 11mm is 0.43", 12mm is 0.47", 14mm is 0.55", and 16mm is 0.63".

Jewelry Gauges

Gauge refers to the thickness of the jewelry that passes through your piercing. Common gauge conversions are: 22G is approximately 0.5mm, 20G is 0.8mm, 18G is 1mm, 16G is 1.2mm, 14G is 1.6mm, 12G is 2mm, 10G is 2.5mm, 8G is 3mm, 6G is 4mm, 4G is 5mm, 2G is 6mm, 0G is 8mm, and 00G is 10mm.

Keep in mind that the smaller the gauge number, the thicker the jewelry.

Common Piercing Sizes

Piercing sizes can vary depending on anatomy, placement, healing, and the jewelry being worn. Common earlobe jewelry is approximately 6–8mm in length and 18G–20G. Eyebrow jewelry is commonly 6–8mm and 16G. Labret jewelry is commonly 6–8mm and 14G–16G. Monroe jewelry is commonly around 6mm and 16G–18G. Navel jewelry is commonly 10–12mm and 14G. Nipple jewelry is commonly 14–20mm and 12G–14G. Nose jewelry is commonly around 7mm and 18G–20G. Tongue jewelry is commonly around 16mm and 14G.

Ball Sizes & Inside Diameters

Common jewelry ball sizes include 1.5mm, 2mm, 2.5mm, 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 8mm, and 10mm.

For hoops, horseshoes, captive bead rings, and other circular jewelry, diameter is measured across the inside of the ring rather than from its outside edges. Common inside diameters include 6mm, 8mm, 9mm, 10mm, and 12mm.

How to Measure Your Jewelry

For hoops, horseshoes, and circular jewelry, measure straight across the inside diameter of the ring without including the thickness of the jewelry itself.

For barbells and studs, measure the wearable length of the bar or post—the portion that sits inside the piercing. Do not include decorative ends, balls, or threading.

To determine gauge, measure the thickness of the portion of jewelry that passes through the piercing.

Sizing varies depending on anatomy and jewelry style. Always check the sizing listed on the individual product and consult your professional piercer if you're unsure of your size.
